Research through Design in the Context of Teaching Urban Computing

This paper focuses on the educational experience of teaching the topic of Urban Computing in a postgraduate design studio context. It also discusses some of the most interesting projects that students designed and prototyped while using design-oriented technology, ranging from wireless micro-electronics to data stream caching, and working in a real-life physical context of an existing urban environment. The paper is intended to raise valuable questions about the role of interaction design in the field of urban computing, as well as critique the efficacy of various approaches to student learning in the context of urban computing.
